[VIDEO] The Old Guard (Netflix)

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 2nd July 2020, 23:07

In the absence of bums on seats, the online streaming services are filling the void with material that, under normal circumstances, would look more than at home on the big screen.

One that popped up on my feed today was trailer for The Old Guard, starring Charlise Theron as the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries shooting people and blowing crap up, while avoiding identification by a shadowy organisation wishing to try to weaponize their abilities. Would certainly come in handy during most conflicts, but, you know, morals and that.

Most interesting aspect for me personally is that the big bad appears to be played by Dudley Dursley himself, Harry Melling.

Out next Friday, so probably available everywhere else Saturday morning. They really need to get a grip on that

One-word review: meh. A couple of highgly-choreographed fight scenes to separate the long conversations philosophising about the deeper aspects of what it means to be immortal. The cast does well enough, although Dudley isn't really that believable as the immoral enfent terrible billionaire, but it's nice to see him in something else. FX leaves a bit to be desired as well.

Overall it ends up feeling like a double-length pilot for a BBC series a la Spooks. Watchable, but probably not more than once.
