Got Firefox & Avast? Probably not for much longer

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 4th December 2019, 09:21

This is a little concerning

Quote:
Wladimir Palant, creator of AdBlock Plus, published an analysis of Avast extensions in late October 2019 on his personal site. He discovered that Avast's extension transmitted data to Avast that provided Avast with browsing history information. The data that the extension submits exceeded what is necessary to function according to Palant.

The extensions include the full address of the page, the page title, referer, and other data in the request. Data is submitted when pages are opened but also when tabs are switched. On search pages, every single link on the page is submitted as well.

Reason enough to avoid Avast, or at least remove the browser extension.

Avast is fine really but certainly don't use the extensions.

Still using Avast anyone?

Looks like they are still harvesting all your data.

But only if you let them

Quote:
Avast collects data from users that opt-in and then provides that to Jumpshot, but multiple Avast users told Motherboard they were not aware Avast sold browsing data, raising questions about how informed that consent is.

So the user allows Avast to collect data, and then are shocked about what Avast does with it. Too many people just click through without reading the Ts&Cs. I never opt-in. Nosey buggers.

This is a trust issue, it shouldn't be about T&Cs, this is an anti-virus product, it gets to read every file you open on your system, scan every webpage you download.

They are untrustworthy, and anything you give this much access to, should be way more than trustworthy.

Appalling ethics for a company that you trust to protect you.
