How to Build a Film Collection That Actually Gets Watched
Building a DVD collection can be incredibly rewarding, but many collectors end up with shelves full of films they never actually watch. The key is being intentional about what you buy rather than accumulating films based on hype or bargain-bin hunting.
Start by thinking about your genuine viewing habits. Are you someone who rewatches classics, or do you prefer discovering new films? Do you favour particular genres or directors? Your collection should reflect what you actually enjoy, not what you think you should like. This self-awareness prevents wasteful purchases and ensures your shelf space contains films you'll genuinely return to.
Consider the physical format carefully. DVDs remain excellent value in the UK, especially for older films or niche releases unavailable on streaming services. However, Blu-rays offer superior picture quality if you have the equipment, whilst 4K releases provide stunning visuals for newer blockbusters. Balance your budget across formats based on what matters most to you.
Create a wish list before shopping. Rather than impulse buying, note films you're genuinely interested in and wait for reasonable prices. Charity shops, second-hand retailers, and online marketplaces often have excellent stock at fraction of RRP. This approach also gives you time to read reviews and ensure purchases align with your interests.
Organise your collection logically. Whether you arrange by genre, director, or alphabetically, consistency makes browsing enjoyable. A well-organised collection is more likely to get watched because you can easily find what you're in the mood for. Consider creating a simple spreadsheet or using apps designed for film collectors to track what you own.
Don't feel pressured to own everything. Streaming services provide excellent access to vast libraries. Your physical collection works best as a curated selection of films you truly value—either for repeated viewing or because they hold special meaning. Quality over quantity creates a collection you'll love maintaining.
Finally, remember that building a collection takes time. There's no rush to accumulate hundreds of titles. Savour the process of discovering films, reading about them, and gradually assembling a collection that genuinely represents your taste and interests.
